AFTER THE COPS TOOK Carl away, Javier woke up and the EMTs took him in for a bunch of tests—but of course since he was an illegal with no health insurance they kicked him back quickly. Freddie knuckled down to finish the movie. He used creative angles and interspersed footage of Javier sucking Ed, making it look like he was still blowing Carl.

It was a crap movie, and everybody knew it. Even Javier, who was so new to the business he hadn’t gotten a screen credit yet, knew it sucked. But Freddie had an obligation to Mario to finish the film. He holed up in the studio, working eighteen hours a day to cut the film together.

He kept the door locked in case crazy Carl decided to come back. He told Ed and Javier and Holly that they were done and paid them off. When Javier came to collect his check, he nearly cried, he was so grateful to Freddie for giving him a chance.

“I grow up in Mexico,” he said. “My father, he is muy macho. I never please him, so I run away when I am fourteen. I want to come to El Norte, be movie star in El Lay. In Tijuana I meet man who help me come across.” He looked down shyly. “He was first man I let fuck me. I think maybe he love me little bit, because he give me money for bus fare here.”

“What have you been doing since then?” Freddie asked, reaching for a bottle of water.

“I sleep at shelter for first couple weeks, until I met this guy. He say I can live in his guest house if I clean house and let him fuck me when he want.”

Freddie shook his head. His world was full of stories like that, young guys taken advantage of in the most awful ways. At least he paid his actors well, never made them do things he wouldn’t do himself, tried to let them retain a little dignity when they could.

“How long were you there?” Freddie asked.

“Nearly six weeks,” Javier said. “Very bad. But then I meet Mr. Ed and he have me come live by him. From him I meet you, and now I get pay for what I do. Is very good.”

“And you’ve been with Ed all this time?”

“Soon I have money for my own apartment. Maybe two, three more months. I am staying with Mr. Ed now too long, almost three months.”

Freddie did the math so quickly he nearly spit out his water. “Six weeks with this other guy and then three months with Ed? How the fuck old are you, anyway? You told me you were nineteen.” He had asked the kid for ID and been given something that said he was of legal age. He knew the name was fake, but he’d assumed, because Ed had recommended him, that the kid was legal.

Javier looked down at the floor. “I lie because Mr. Ed tell me to. He say if I am too young, you not hire me.
