It was nearly ten o’clock when Faith pulled up to the gate. She could see lights on upstairs in the house and was glad her father had made it back safely. She opened the gate and pulled through before closing it behind her and driving up to the old farmhouse. She’d gotten the keys the week before and had moved in only the essentials, a couple mattresses on the floor for herself and Ogden to sleep on, as her father was staying with her during the massive town renovations. She’d brought the recliner she’d bought while living at Cameron’s and had a couple folding camping chairs and folding TV tray-type tables next to the chair.

She pulled up into the driveway, Ogden’s truck parked off to the side. She sat for a moment admiring the wraparound porch and the swing she and Wyatt had shared together, and couldn’t quite believe the house was hers. She cut the engine of her SUV and climbed out, slamming the door shut behind her. For not the first time, she was amazed at just how quiet it was on the hill. Coming from the craziness of New York to the slightly-less-craziness of Denver and now to the outright still calm of Wynter, she certainly felt she’d made a good choice in purchasing the old farmhouse. The bank had been so grateful to get it off their hands that she’d gotten it and the surrounding acres for next to nothing. Though sorry to see her go, Jill and Stephanie had been impressed by her find and were in the middle of making purchases of their own all over the tiny mountain town.

The front door was unlocked, so she locked it behind her and didn’t bother to turn on any lights as she made her way through the large open space that was the foyer to the stairs that led to the second floor. The strange layout of the first floor bemused her, with its large open foyer but closed-off dining room, kitchen, living room, and sitting room. She intended to open it all up one day.

Her boots thudded dully on the wood steps as she made her slow way up, her body tired and hurting and desperately wanting a long, hot shower.

She passed by the bedroom Ogden had been using the past few nights and stopped at the open door. He was sitting on the mattress on the floor, neatly folding clothing that was being packed into a duffel bag.

“Hey,” she said, lifting her hand for a small wave when he glanced up at her. “Leaving tonight?”

“No, but I plan to be on my way early,” he said, setting aside the white undershirts he’d just folded to begin on a pair of his ever-present cords. “I got you a dinner to go from the café,” he said. “It’s in the fridge. Wasn’t sure if you’d managed to stop for lunch after your big find this morning.”

Faith blew out a long breath, running a hand through her hair.
