CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE
Stephen led the group up the stairs, to the closed-off third floor of the house on Gaylord. Merriweather took up the rear, following the women, feeling pinpricks on his neck as they passed the second floor landing. Surprised that the gift had not yet erupted, not yet come undone from the hold he had placed on it, Merriweather knew he would have to let it slip through eventually. There was no other way to read the house.
“Okay,” Stephen said, leading the group through the third floor hallway to the furthest rooms on the west side of the house.
“Okay,” Stephen repeated, reaching the end of the hallway and opening the door on the north side. “This is, I think, one of the bedrooms that maybe my great-grandmother, my grandmother, and even my mother might have used when they were children. There’s only one bathroom up here and all the rest of the rooms appear to be bedrooms.”
Tasha and Melissa stood aside, let Merriweather enter the room first. Merriweather felt very little activity in the room, eased up on the gift, still, just the tingling on his neck.
Merriweather walked around the room which faced the front and north side of the house. “I don’t really feel much. And no, I don’t think this was your great-grandmother’s, or your grand…” He stopped in the middle of the room, looked to the rounded windows that faced Gaylord. “There were, are…” He closed his eyes, ratcheted down his hold on the gift. An image emerged. “They’ve watched from that window, the front window. They see the comings and goings, from and to the house.”
Stephen and the women looked at Merriweather. Saw his eyes close, his arm stretched, his finger pointing at the window.
“Who watches?” Melissa’s voice was barely audible.
Stephen moved his index finger to his lips and shook his head.
“They see this world through ancient eyes. Something we have lost. They see more intensely than we do. They see further. They wait. They wait for…” Merriweather opened his eyes, dropped his arm back to his side.
Tasha glanced at the window, sensed there had been a presence in the room. What Merriweather had just said could describe Wolf. But, what do they wait for?.
“What are they waiting for?” Stephen asked before Tasha could speak the same thought.
“I’m sorry,” Merriweather turned, looked around the room, “just as I began to understand what they, whatever, were waiting for, the image of some of my friends, old friends I’ve known forever crossed my mind. I lost my read just then.”
“What you said, though,” Melissa took hold of Tasha’s hand, “sounds a whole lot like what Tasha told us about wolves, that they can see—”
“Two looks away,” Tasha interrupted.
Merriweather nodded his head. “Wolves,” he said, walking out of the room, thinking: And why would I see them all, Mobley, Trummel, Finster, and Marty just standing there, forming a half-circle? Why?
Stephen, Tasha and Melissa looked at one another. They didn’t have to give voice to the confusion they saw in the others’ eyes.
