The days drifted on like the current running through the sea. The two boys got closer and the old Chinaman watched after them both, making sure they had food and stayed out of sight. The two young boys started to learn English from books given to them by the Chinaman. They were mostly about pirates and how they came to Jamaica. Mogli only understood a little about pirates due to his lack of education, but from the picture the young Chinese boy painted about them, it was clear that pirates were a scary group of people. How could this be? It didn’t make sense to the boy that mean and brutal people could come from the same land that Bob spoke about with such a calming tone. He didn’t want to believe this to be true.

Mogli knew bad people. He could sense it when he came across them. He knew how he felt around the rebels, always on edge, scared, and sometimes very angry. He had to watch as the rebels did such horrible things. Needless to say, Mogli had firsthand experience of what bad people were capable of doing and he was very afraid of the pirates in these books.

The next morning, as the Chinese boy described how the pirates came to Jamaica, the boys came across a map of the island in one of the books. It was a very old map and not very detailed, but you could still make out the island just as well. Mogli looked at the map but he didn’t have a good sense of where he was going in relation to where he was coming from. All he knew was that he was on a quest to the island with Bob’s home.

The two boys settled down in the storage room and drifted off to sleep with the sweet sounds of Bob. Mogli awoke suddenly, the idea of pirates too traumatic to let him rest peacefully. The stories the Chinese boy read to him were so similar to what the rebels did to his village. They looted, raped and killed innocent people. When Mogli did sleep, his dreams were violent. His mind revisited the night when the rebels burned his family’s hut and he imagined what they were like in Jamaica holding Bob captive. Mogli couldn’t believe that people like this existed in more than one place.

As the ship coasted towards Jamaica there was restlessness amongst the passengers. It was morning and the boy couldn’t sleep. He got up and went to the front of the boat to get some fresh air. The boy looked up in the sky and it was a deep, foreboding red. He turned to walk back to his hiding spot and saw the captain. The man was so large and tall that he towered over the bow of the ship. His jaw was defined and firm. He appeared angry and intimidating. Mogli was scared but continued to study the captain when he heard him say, “This does not look good.
