Twenty-Four

As the elevator doors opened, Madison relaxed. Her initial startled gasp deflated to a slow exhale as she raced to the woman waiting outside the penthouse door.

“Jordan. God, I'm so relieved.” With the keycard still clasped in her hands, Madison lifted it to the door.

Jordan stopped her. “I wouldn't, if I were you. We need to go.”

With no option but to trust her best-frenemy-forever, Madison followed the woman who always rocked femme fatale to the nth degree. The light pitter-pats of Madison's sneakers on the emergency staircase seemed oddly louder than Jordan’s five-inch heels, and she heaved heavy breaths to keep up.

“Jordan.” Madison grew breathless, giving everything to push her feet faster. “Please tell me we're not running down fifty floors.”

Jordan’s voice was cool on what to her seemed a mild stroll. “Technically, it would be fifty-two floors. But no. Just two more floors. There's an emergency exit that I rigged not to latch. From there, we’ll take a staff elevator to the basement, then outside to my car.” Jordan looked back, the sparkle normally bright in her dark eyes seeming duller. “Now, tell me everything that's happened today.”

With Jordan stopped and waiting for some form of acknowledgment, Madison nodded several times, saying only, “Of course.”

As Jordan resumed leading her down a very premeditated trail until they were safely out of the building, Madison rushed through her account of everything that had happened. In a back alley, Jordan removed her leather jacket. She popped the trunk, dumping the sleek jacket in the black town car. It looked very much like the one Madison had been in that morning.

“Oh my God. Jordan, the driver! There was a man who saved me. We have to help him.”

“What am I, Wonder Woman?” Jordan said dryly. “And just “a man”? Your eyewitness account needs some work.”

“He had your handkerchief.”

After a few blinks, Jordan gave Madison a blank stare. “It's the life we choose, Madison. We can't all have guardian angels. As you can see, there's only one of me to go around. And . . .”

Jordan lifted Madison's chin, undoubtedly to get a better look at the tears fighting their way free.

With a sigh, she continued. “You've once again managed to snare all my attention.”

Horrified, Madison stepped back. Swallowing the bitter taste of acid rising in her throat, she shook her head. “Leave me. Go help him!”

Amused, Jordan challenged Madison with a smooth, seductive smile. “If only I took orders from you.” Jordan eyed her jacket, apparently unhappy with laying it flat. She began a slow succession of folds, almost rolling it into a ball.

As aggressively as she dared, Madison grabbed her arm. “Hey. I'm not asking.”

Jordan let out an amused huff but stayed focused, obsessively fixated on the jacket to get the folds just right.

Taking a step back and releasing her grip, Madison said softly, “I'm begging. Please.”

Suddenly satisfied with the final succession of folds, Jordan sported a genuine smile of pride. “There. That's better.”

Yeah. Looks great. You're a shoo-in for lead salesclerk at the Gap.
