In addition to KPIs, certain financial statements should always be prepared in a 12- or 13-month trend format, in addition to the standard formats produced by most accounting systems. At a minimum, because of their importance in reviewing operating results, an abbreviated income statement (shortened to one page) and a statement of cash flow (also only one page) should be a part of every monthly financial package the accounting department produces. These two reports provide so much insight with a quick scan that they are often reviewed instead of the static current month reports typically produced by accounting software.
