Walking the path of ‘good enough’
On the flip side, when we accept there’s not a straight line to success and happiness, it’s like moving off the icy slope and onto a soft grassy path. It’s that lovely fresh-cut grass here, and for extra lush-ness, I want you to visualize that you’ve kicked off your shoes! The ice has melted, which makes it softer and easier underfoot. When we trip on the grassy path of good enough, we still get hurt and, of course, it still sucks. After all, who wants life to take an unplanned turn?
But while the perfectionist would’ve slid 50 metres down the icy slope into cynicism and blaming outside factors, to keep emotional discomfort at arm’s length, those on the ‘good enough’ path fall where they fall. They don’t go anywhere, and after some time to acknowledge healing and hindsight, they start making steps forward again. It’s this single factor – staying in the game for long enough – that overall is the secret to success (and happiness).
It’s about never giving up. It’s about always learning. Always moving forward. Always staying optimistic. No matter how slow it can feel sometimes. No matter how badly you may have failed, been rejected or got it wrong, each fall contains nuggets of wisdom you can take with you on the next stage in your journey towards the summit. Nuggets you would never have known before – how to avoid those kinds of potholes, how to move past those kinds of rocks, or how to get round those kinds of waterways.
How would you know how to navigate obstacles on the path if you’d never learned from previous mistakes? Your path to greater levels of success and happiness will never be a perfect one. The moment you expect it to be is the same moment the obstacles will have a greater impact on your progress than they should.
