LUNA RAE

The sound of his car engine withers away, the headlights trailing down the road in the woods as he pulls away from Rex’s cabin.

Gripping my robe at the neckline, I stand in the doorway, my eyes following him take the path home.

I should’ve left with him.

Or he should’ve spent the night here.

He said he had stuff to do in the morning. And I said I’d rather stay.

I thought he felt that sleeping here would be too much. In the same way, I felt that going back with him would mean too much.

So, we keep our distance for now.

Our emotional distance, that is. Neither of us wants to step into that territory. It probably doesn’t make much sense, but it’s better that way... I guess.

What else is there to say?

It wasn’t easy to let him go.

He has that hard-to-fight effect on me and whether he knows it or not is another story.

I feel tied to him... The hormones... as Frankie often says. Maybe. The fucking hormones.

They wanted me to hug him and kiss him and sleep with him in the same bed.

Although we did have a moment right there on the couch when he topped me, and we were catching our breaths... When my arms were locked around him, and I felt his weight on me.

When he flooded me with his release, and we were wrapped in heat.

His hand rested in my hair, and his lips were asleep on my neck. I never felt anyone closer, not even his brother.

He felt close to me, although he didn’t say a word to me. I knew he’d not speak to me.

Those kinds of words were locked away.

They are banned from our affair, the same way sleeping in the same bed, cuddling, and spending time afterward is out of the question.

Last night, it took me by surprise at the motel, but now, I know it’s just the way things are with him.

The car is long gone when I plug myself back to reality.

Here I am, exiled to the woods, spending time alone in a beautiful cabin surrounded by the trees, the birds, a lake, and the starry sky.

My hair is still damp from the sweat, and my skin is still embalmed with his scent, not to mention the delicious softness in my body.

Slowly, I shake my head.

Another wall is down.

Another cycle is complete.

I take a long breath, inhaling the incense of the forest before stepping in and locking the door.

The cabin looks more alive than ever, and memories are peppered all around the room and the kitchen, flashing in front of my eyes.

The empty glasses of wine are still on the table, and the chairs are pulled back as they remained after we moved away.

The sofa is a mess–– he promised he’d sent people to clean it up in the morning, so everything looks in order when Rex comes here.

The lights are low, and the air is warm.

I make myself a cup of tea and slide into a chair with a big mug
