“What Do You Do If Your Mind Can't Understand But Your Heart Can't Let Go?”

* * *

A knock on the door signaled Marisa to look up. Samantha entered the lab and collapsed against the wall. “Hey there. The last patient signed out.”

“Yes, thankfully,” Samantha replied. “So, I was wondering what you were doing tonight.”

Marisa shrugged. “Busy night ahead of me. More Netflix. More wine.” She laughed. “You?”

“Well, that’s kind of why I’m in here.”

Marisa continued to look down at her paperwork, not realizing Samantha was moving closer to her.

“You see, my sister is the only one home, and I’m sure her jerk of a boyfriend will be there. They’ll be hooking up to try to move this baby along further.”

Marisa looked up as Samantha continued, “That’s a whole other story. Anyway, I’m not looking forward to the sounds that will come from them as they’re, well, you know…” Her eyes dropped, and Marisa smirked.

“Pretty sure I know. So, would you like to come over?”

Samantha looked up, and her smile deepened as she nodded. “Please.”

“Let me finish up here. Give me ten minutes, and I’ll be out.”

“Thank you!”

“Oh, by the way, did Liz come by the other day to drop off brownies?”

With a poker face, Samantha said, “No. Why?”

“No reason.”

As Samantha spun on her heel and went back out to her computer, Marisa frowned. She believed Liz, so why would Samantha lie about something like that?

Dismissing it for now, she turned back to her computer and stared at it for a moment until she pushed her work to the side. It could wait until the next day when she had a clearer mind.

“Are you ready to go?” Marisa asked, throwing her purse over her shoulder.

“That was fast,” Samantha said, jumping up from her desk.

“Decided work could wait. I just had paperwork to do anyway. Turn the lights off on your way out, and let’s get out of here.”

Marisa was ready to dig into a bottle of wine. As she left the hospital, her mind wandered back to Liz. She was most likely gone for the evening. The way things had strayed for them was awkward because she got the feeling that she had said something wrong, at least in Liz’s eyes. Liz wanted to hear what she wanted to hear, but that wasn’t Marisa’s job. Marisa wasn’t supposed to tell Liz what would make her feel better. That was the immaturity in Liz, and it came with her age.

It was Marisa’s job to be honest with her. And in her honest opinion, Liz wasn’t someone who could go running into the fire for a bunch of kids who were in desperate need of help. If she couldn’t handle one child having to struggle, how could she handle twenty and all at the same time? Marisa was only thinking about Liz and what would benefit her. She wanted to be wrong, but at that moment, she didn’t think she was.

“Do you want to follow me?” Marisa asked.

“Sure! I’m parked right over there.” Samantha pointed to a small gray SUV.
