CHAPTER 11

Kora pulled into her usual parking spot at her apartment building, and hurried over to the front entrance. Using her key, she let herself in, then she hustled over to her mailbox to gather her mail. She had forgotten to grab it when Seth had come home with her two days ago after their long shift so she could pack a bag to go to his place because of the person that was after her. With her hands full, knowing the elevator took forever, she ran up the five flights to her apartment. She let herself in, went through it quickly to see if anything was out of place, then satisfied all was well, she went to the kitchen and grabbed a plastic baggie and filled it with the cat food she kept in a lower cupboard. In less than five minutes she was out the door, making sure she grabbed several magazines that had been in her mail. She would read them between calls at the station to keep from getting bored out of her mind. She made a mental note to go to the library to pick up the next book in the series she was reading, but knew she couldn’t do anything for the next twenty-four hours, since she would be on duty then.

Kora jogged back down the stairs, and instead of going out of the front door, she went to the back of the building, and let herself out the door the tenants used to take their garbage out of. She made sure she had her keys, and then secured the door behind her. With the baggie of food in her hand, she started toward the dumpster where she had left the cat dishes. Seeing them empty, she dumped the food in it, and looked up with a grin. Standing there staring at her was the most adorable cat she had ever seen. She didn’t know what kind it was, but it was the type that had a smushed up face, and its ears were close to its head. Not knowing if the gray and white cat was male or female, she held out her hand and wiggled her fingers. The cat looked down it’s smushed up nose at her, and looked through her. Kora chuckled as she looked at the cat, shook her head, and stood. The next thing she knew, her head bounced off the side of the metal dumpster, and instinctively, she kicked out, and heard a grunt. The next thing she knew, she was being hit in the head, and as she kicked out, her attacker grunted again when she made contact with their knee, and they stumbled.

Kora saw was the glint of what she assumed was a knife and when she tried to back away, her attacker lunged as he swung his arm out toward her. She didn’t feel the burning pain in her side right away, but swore. “Son of a bitch.” Again, she went on the attack and this time she held up her arms like a fighter and egged him on.
