Chapter 19

—No one ever expects to fall in love.—

Cash stepped into Jesse’s office, found Reese and Elijah working—well, Reese was. Elijah was leaned back in his chair, his eyes closed. Cash cleared his throat lightly to alert her to his presence.

Then Elijah jerked forward. “Don’t shave my eyebrows!”

Reese snickered, and Cash paused. “I won’t shave your eyebrows, promise.”

“Go get some sleep, Eli. You’re not doing anyone any good. You’ve been working your ass off today. Go recharge.”

“Yeah, okay.” He squeezed her shoulder once in a familiar way, one that looked brotherly.

Cash hoped it was anyway. “Did you eat dinner?”

She still didn’t look up. “I ate a protein bar.”

Yeah, that was what he thought. He’d done a little sleuthing—aka he’d simply texted Hailey—and found out what Reese’s favorites were. “I brought you something.”

She still didn’t look over, even as he sat in Elijah’s vacated seat.

“It’s Swedish chocolate cake.”

She froze for a moment, then side-eyed him, those gorgeous green eyes widening when they landed on what was in his hand. She grabbed for it. “Why didn’t you lead with that?”

“So food is the way to your heart?”

She snorted even as she grabbed the fork from his other hand. “Did you make this?”

“Ah, no.” But he was planning to learn if this made her that happy. Not to mention the moan she let out after her first bite. It was straight-up orgasmic. Holy shit, if he ever convinced her to take a chance on him, he’d bring chocolate cake to bed with them to sweeten the deal.

Not that women usually needed anything to sweeten the deal when it came to him. They were always throwing themselves at him. Most of it, he was fairly certain, stemmed from his money. Because he had a lot of it, thanks to his foresight in investing in Jesse. Everything the man touched turned to gold, so it just made good sense to invest in him.

“I got it from a local bakery, and there’s more in the fridge.”

“I take back everything bad I said about you.” She grinned around a mouthful of cake.

“Why would you say anything bad about me?”

She snickered once. “I’m just kidding, man. I mean, I think it’s weird how you’re always smiling, but I try not to judge.”

Whatever, she liked it. “So any luck on the lawyer?” Cash knew what she was working on, courtesy of Jesse and Hailey. And since he’d felt useless here, he’d gone to the office and caught up on a few things. Better than sitting around watching everyone else work on finding Easton. He hated all of this, wished he could help somehow. The man was one of his best, oldest friends.

“A little, yeah. I’ve compiled a fairly comprehensive file on the guy and have a list of all his clients. Or most of them anyway. I might not have all. It at least narrows down who we’re looking for and why.”

“Does that list include Senator Silva?”

“Yeah, why?” She polished off the last bite with another moan he felt all the way to his core.
