Oh, my fucking head. Chris lay back on one of the mattresses, a blanket wrapped around him to ward off the chill that had seemed to settle in his bones, an ache that refused to go away. First, I’m boiling hot. Then I’m like a human ice cube. He could remember his grandmother complaining about hot flashes back when he was little. I doubt the reasons behind her suffering are the same as mine.

Chris turned his head at the click of the door latch. As he’d assumed, Morgan had arrived to keep him company while Lasar and Nary met with the others to strategize. They’d been fussing over him for several hours after he’d fainted at the meeting, and besides the very real need to organize their next move, he’d been wanting some alone time with Morgan.

“Hey, dork. Come join me.” He patted an adjoining mattress. Chris narrowed his eyes in curiosity over some sort of packaged items Morgan cradled in his hands. “Whoa. Are those cookies?”

Morgan plopped down, sitting cross-legged next to him. “Chocolate chip or oatmeal?”

Chris snorted. “You can’t be serious with that question.” Chris held out his hand palm up, wiggling his fingers. “Drop those chocolate chip right here, dude.”

Morgan placed two large cookies encased in plastic wrapping onto his waiting palm. “No problem. I think the oatmeal raisin are much better.”

Chris smirked. “That’s because you’re a freak of nature.”

As Morgan noisily opened his cookies, he smirked at Chris. “I see someone’s feeling better.”

Chris propped himself up on one elbow so he could eat the unexpected bounty of old-school processed food without choking on it. “Yeah, pretty much. Just a raging headache that won’t back down and freezing my ass off.” He took a bite of sugary goodness, the overwhelming sweetness almost too much to handle after being without for so long. “Wow. These are amazing and sort of disgusting at the same time.”

“If you don’t want them, I could always—”

Chris yanked his cookies out of Morgan’s reach. “Back off. I want them.” After finishing one cookie and swallowing it down, he wrapped the second one up and set it aside. He didn’t want to relinquish it—he had faith that the second one wouldn’t make his stomach as queasy. “My mom said she was kinda mean to you guys, you know, you and Graham. Has she approached you since I got here?”

Morgan set down his own snack. “Yeah, she did. I’m not gonna lie, the whole thing really upset me. I mean, I’m her nephew, grew up on the same street as you guys, shared in the barbecues and birthdays and holidays and all that.”

“And the fort in the backyard. Remember that? She was ready to kill us when we used her fancy new bedsheets as curtains.”

They laughed at the memory then fell into a melancholy silence.

Chris sighed. “Look, I know. But remember how angry you were with me before you realized you were matched with Rama and Hallosh?”

Morgan ran his hand across the top of his head as he gazed downward.
