Chapter 34

The White House

President Harold Scott was presiding over a cabinet meeting. In addition to his full cabinet, the president had invited the heads of the DEA, FBI, and border patrol.

After taking care of the normal slate of government matters, President Scott said, “I want to focus the rest of this meeting on border security. The border patrol and the DEA have both asked me to include more money for their operations in the budget.

“You have received copies of the situation reports that I requested from these two agencies. The information in those reports paint a grim picture of what’s happening along the border. The number of people trying to get across has increased to unbelievable numbers.

“I’m going to be asking Congress to increase the amount of money allocated to the border patrol by 40 percent. The Democrats are going to make a big fuss and fight us all the way. The border patrol has worked closely with the DEA and FBI. Starting this weekend, I want the heads of these agencies hitting the weekend talk shows.

“I want to put Congress in the position that even if they don’t want to help me, the citizens of this country will force them to do it. I want to highlight exactly what is happening and show the people the numbers that we are seeing. Any suggestions?”

The secretary of state said, “Mr. President, you have to do something that will focus people’s attention on what’s happening. You need something dramatic so that the news media will pick it up and run with it. The lefty news media will make a big stink about whatever you do and, in this case, that could work in your favor.”

“Mr. Secretary, do you have something in mind to get this rolling?”

“Yes, I do. Right now we have fifteen hundred National Guard troops on the border helping the border patrol, mainly with paperwork. I suggest you bring that number up to five thousand and have them start beefing up the sections of the border without any serious fencing. Have them start stringing razor wire along those sections of the border. You can also put more of them on collecting the illegals picked up by the border patrol and transporting them to the processing centers.”

The president turned to the chief of the border patrol and asked, “What’s your opinion on the idea?”

“An additional thirty-five hundred troops would certainly help us out. We’re so shorthanded, and I could use the additional men. And there are sections along the border in Texas and New Mexico where fencing could use some beefing up. I have huge sections of land where the only thing stopping someone from getting in is three strands of barbed wire installed by the cattle ranchers.”

They spent the next half hour discussing various suggestions. Finally President Scott said, “I’ll work on a plan to get more National Guard troops on the border and should be able to make an announcement tomorrow afternoon. That will give the mainstream media a couple of days to scream before the weekend talk shows.
