Chapter 13

Bronx

I didn’t know what I was thinking when I told Kenz I’d watch Joy. I was pretty confident at first, but after she started writing down all those damn phone numbers, and going over the Heimlich with me, I was completely freaked out.

The minute the door shut, panic rose inside of me. It was more terrifying than stepping into the cage unprepared for the fight. But, when I looked at Joy, her chubby cheeks, big green eyes and adorable smile, suddenly the fears disappeared and the tension radiating along my shoulder blades eased.

The kid was fucking cute as hell, and pretty damn entertaining, too.

“What’s a date?” Her head tilted, blonde curls bouncing with the movement.

“A date is when someone takes you out and they buy you things.”

Her big green eyes doubled in size, and a ridiculously large smile spread across her face. “I get presents? I like presents. Is it a princess?”

I laughed. “Why don’t we start with ice cream and go from there?”

Luckily, I had another royalty check come in, and since I wasn’t wasting money on booze, I had a few bucks to spare.

I grabbed the bag that Kenz insisted I had to take with me—I just wished it wasn’t pink. I held my hand out to Joy, and she instantly slid her tiny little fingers into my grasp. We headed downstairs to the restaurant, and she skipped in like she owned the place.

She might as well have. She waved to all the patrons and offered hellos to the ones she knew by name. They all cooed over her, smiled and laughed as she went on her way.

“This is Bronx,” she said to an older couple. “We’re going on a date which means he’s going to buy me ice cream and presents.”

The woman pressed her wrinkly hand to her chest. “Isn’t that precious?” she said to her husband, who looked like he was asleep in his eggs.

“Well, Little Miss Joy, you have fun on your date.”

“I will,” Joy announced proudly, then took my hand and guided me toward the door, clearly determined to get the show on the road.

“This one’s going to be a heartbreaker,” I said over my shoulder to the old woman who was still watching us.

“That she is,” she said with a wave before we pushed outside.

The air was hot and humidity clung thick in the air, but it was weather I’d gotten used to. “Where to first?” I asked.

“Ice cream, silly!” A string of giggles fell from her mouth and I playfully smacked myself on the forehead.

“Of course. I am silly, aren’t I?”

We walked, hand in hand, down to the beach where I knew an ice cream truck set up shop every day and ordered two vanilla cones with rainbow sprinkles.

I carefully handed Joy her cone, her eyes wide as she took it from me with both hands. I paid, and the guy handed me extra napkins, which I shoved into my pocket. We found a bench and with one arm I managed to lift Joy onto the seat.
