Chapter Fourteen

Rome smiles and watches as I go around all of the others to say goodnight, giving them kisses and correctly assuming that I’m going to be sleeping in Rome’s room tonight. I need some cuddles and just to be held right now. I’m so damn tired, and judging from the yawns that they’re all repressing and their sluggish movements, they’re all feeling the same.

“Try not to fall asleep before you’ve got some painkillers in you, Koroleva, or you’re just going to end up waking up in pain to take them soon anyway, and we all need to get some proper rest,” Rome warns me as I leave the room.

Now usually, I’d say something fantastically witty in response because that’s who I am, I am the self-proclaimed queen of witty comebacks, but I can’t get it up as it were right now, so instead, I just wave my hand absently behind me and give a sideways thumbs up which I’m hoping he understands as you got it, I’m going to do as you’ve suggested. Judging from his quiet chuckle and the ones coming from the others, I think it's reasonably safe to assume that he’s got the message.

The stairs seem twice as long as they were this morning, and I don’t think I realised quite how fucking tired I was, but I really am exhausted. I think, at this point, I’m going to be lucky if I don’t fall asleep in the shower. I mean, I know that we’ve been awake for a while, having such an early start this morning and then everything else that happened, but I didn’t really expect it to hit me this hard. Of course, we have been pushing ourselves hard for a while now, and it was bound to catch up with me eventually. All I need is a really good night's sleep, one that I can wake up from myself and not be woken up from.

There’s no immediate threat to us or to anyone else that we care about right now. There is nothing that we need to deal with right now or even tomorrow. We don’t even really need to go to Rip’s grandparent's place tomorrow if we’re too tired; I know for a fact that they won’t mind if we take another day. They are all more than aware of how hard it is that we’ve been working and what we’ve accomplished, and actually, the more I think about it, the more sure I am that I’ll make the suggestion to Rome when he comes to bed that we’ll put off securing Rip’s place until the day after. We need a proper rest day, especially if there’s a chance that there could be someone that poses a threat and still supports Rip’s parents there.

So far, none of the other staff members have seemed to hold any loyalty toward the parent heirs, but from the way that Rip was talking and the fact that he thinks it’s a concern in the first
