SLAVERY IN EGYPT

We continue the Story, with Avadim hayinu le pharo. (We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt). And now I have a problem. According to Bernadette Menu, jurist and Egyptologist (and I translate): ‘Slavery in the classical sense as defined by Roman law probably never existed in ancient Egypt.’ Those who have seen the Women in Egypt show at the Brooklyn Museum of Art will have realized how advanced and egalitarian ancient Egypt was, compared with neighboring civilizations.

It was only in Ptolemiac times, under Greco-Roman influences, that slavery, as we usually understand the term, came to Egypt. Yes, before then everyone was a dependent of the state, but there were no private slaves. All the public projects were by corvée, a system of transient rotating compulsory levies, as were those used by King Solomon for his Temple building. The nearest to slavery in Egypt would be prisoners-of- war, or captive foreigners distributed to armies or temples.
