JACK “SWAMI” HEBNER pioneered surfing in India in 1976. In 2004 he established Mantra Surf Club near Mangalore, Karnataka. Swami also inspired the founding of the Surfing Federation of India (SFI) with local youth and became the patron, mentor, and coach for Team India. Surf film director Taylor Steele sought Swami’s participation in the production of Castles in the Sky, featuring several surf destinations in India, thus launching the sport in India onto the international stage. Swami has organized several national surf events, attracting the media and corporate participation. In 2015, inspired by Swami, members of Team India became the first Indian surfers to participate in a World Surf League event in Hainan, China. In 2014, Swami launched Surfing Swami’s Foundation (SSF), funding all its activities personally. The Foundation is dedicated to introducing surfing and related water sports in India—providing free equipment, school scholarships, and environmental awareness training for village girls and boys.
