If You Go

Getting There: The greater Damariscotta region is approximately fifty miles north of Portland, which is served by many major carriers, including Delta (800-221-1212; www.delta.com) and United Airlines (800-864-8331; www.united.com).

Best Time to Visit: Mid-June through September, with weather improving in August.

Guides/Outfitters: Several companies serve the Damariscotta River region, including Midcoast Kayak (207-563-5732; www.midcoastkayak.com).

Level of Difficulty: Paddles in the more sheltered sections of the river are fine for less seasoned paddlers; offshore paddles are only recommended for more advanced kayakers.

Accommodations: Damariscotta, Boothbay, and Pemaquid Point have ample visitor accommodations, from B&Bs to hotels. The Maine Office of Tourism (888-624-6345; www.visitmaine.com) has a comprehensive list of options.
