CRATER HIGHLANDS SIDE-STRIPED CHAMELEON Trioceros sternfeldi

IDENTIFICATION: A small, fat chameleon, without horns, rostral process or ear flaps. The casque is slightly raised posteriorly. The tail is prehensile, about half the total length or slightly more than half. The body scales are very heterogeneous, with two distinctive flank lines of larger granular scales. A medium to small gular crest is present, becoming a short ventral crest, which rarely reaches the vent. A medium-sized dorsal crest of spiny scales extends the length of the back and onto the tail. Maximum size about 17cm, average 10–15cm, hatchlings 4–5cm. Colour in Tanzania usually blotchy green, with one or two distinctive flank stripes of light green or yellow, following the line of the big flank scales, these lines may have precise edges or just be a series of linked blotches; when stressed vertical dark sub-diamonds appear. Some specimens have vivid blue eye turrets. Loita Hills specimens are green with heavy yellow speckling, good camouflage in the yellow lichen-covered trees, the Maralal specimens were predominantly brown and green.
