“Whatever you say.”

That’s exactly what J.K. had said to her. Cassie distinctly remembered not only the words but the precise context in which they’d been spoken. Apparently, however, she hadn’t said nearly enough or maybe she’d said all the wrong things. At any rate, J.K. drove straight past her office and car and on toward her house at a breakneck pace. She knew there was something in politics called damage control, a quick fix when a misstatement caused seemingly irreparable harm to a campaign. She really, really needed a little damage control right now. Unfortunately, she had no idea how to bring it into play in this situation. She’d set something into motion back there at the movies and for the life of her she couldn’t imagine how to stop it.

No, a persistent, self-confident little voice nagged. That voice obviously belonged to someone with a complete grip on her senses. Cassie hadn’t been that controlled since the day J.K. had turned up in response to Teddy’s call. Any two-year-old knew that decisively negative word. Why couldn’t she get that one, firm syllable past her frozen lips?

Cassie wasn’t sure she liked the answer that popped into her mind. She did, too, want to object. She wanted to stop this before it went any further. She knew she had to. Having a casual fling with J.K. might help her temporary hormone imbalance—which she’d only just recently noticed—but it would play havoc with her life. Sex, even the very best sex, didn’t last forever and she would not be the one being left behind next time. So, she would say no.

At the door.

J.K. had her out of the car and inside the house before she could say spit. She’d forgotten he had keys, forgotten that Ryan had given them to him so he could look out for things that time they’d taken a camping vacation in the mountains up in Georgia. She’d also forgotten he could move that fast. It was the one thing she should have remembered about any ballplayer. They were trained to have moves so quick that only a dead-on fastball could catch them between bases. Obviously they practiced those moves off the field and J.K. was at the head of the class.

As his mouth swooped down to cover hers with velvet demand, she realized the one thing she hadn’t forgotten was the devastating power of his kisses. She remembered that in spine-tingling detail. And she melted into his embrace with a tiny sigh of resignation and a whole ton of reservations.

Any minute now, she would say no, she promised herself. Any second she would pull away, regain control of her senses and slug J.K. in his arrogant, presumptuous jaw.

Just not this second, she thought as his tongue slid over hers, setting off yet another riot of bone-melting sensations. Maybe not even this hour, she thought as his fingers found the curve of her breast. A hand swept down the curve of her spine, then over her buttocks, tipping her firmly into his heat and hardness.
