ELEVEN

Eric, Lenny and Beckman were escorted at gunpoint from the edge of the woods to the driveway in front of the house, passing close to the dead guy that had fallen next to one of the pickup trucks parked out there. It appeared to Eric that the rest of the assault team had completed their task of gathering what they were taking from the scene and were ready to move out. From where he and his companions stood now, Eric could see another dead man slumped against the wall by the front entrance, and a quick glance through the broken-down door confirmed there were more bodies inside the structure as well. He couldn’t see them well enough to make out any details of the casualties, but the two dead outside appeared to be civilian locals. There was nothing special about the house or the vehicles parked there to indicate the occupants were members of some kind of organized insurgency, such as Beckman had spoken of, so the size of this assault operation seemed far out of proportion to the target. Eric hoped he would learn more of what really happened here eventually, but for now he had far more pressing concerns, since he’d foolishly allowed himself to be talked into approaching these men. Now, he and Lenny found themselves detained against their will, as did Beckman, who’d thought he’d be welcomed by these troops as one of their own.

But were these men even National Guard troops at all, as the PFC had so confidently asserted? Eric was beginning to have his doubts now that he was close in amongst them and could observe their actions and overhear some of their conversations. Perhaps some of them were in the reserves or had served in the past, but at the moment they were acting more like a rogue militia than professional soldiers. Particularly disgusting was the joking he overheard about the effects of the M249 on the occupants of the house, and how dumb they’d been to think they could try and fight back.

And now the unit commander, whose rank Eric was still unsure of, seemed completely uninterested in the three of them after his initial brief questioning. He kept his distance and barely glanced their way as the men prepared to move out, though Eric was certain more questions would come later. He figured it would happen shortly after they reached whatever place they were being taken to, but whether from this man or someone higher up the chain that he answered to remained to be seen. As he pondered the potential ramifications of that questioning, Eric briefly considered his options.

He was glad Jonathan and the rest of his little team we’re still free, but it was too bad they hadn’t been observing from somewhere near enough to see what had happened. If he could rely on the three of them to provide a diversion of some kind, then extricating themselves from this situation might be more feasible for him and Lenny and Beckman.
