The violence of the eleven-year colonial war in Guinea-Bissau—the death, hunger, the rape of young girls—left profound and indelible marks on the society. The population was forced to travel long distances to reach the border zones with the neighboring states of Guinea-Conakry and Senegal (which guaranteed protection to the Guinean guerrillas) in order to evacuate the wounded and obtain materials to supply the combat and liberated zones. The dead were almost always buried in the place where they died, and family members weren’t able to carry out funeral ceremonies or give them a dignified grave. Nena Na Fona recalled:

Imagine you’re walking from Quinara to Candjafra and then to Boké. It was very difficult … even more difficult were the deaths I witnessed during the war. There was a man who had fled from Bolama, and he was struck by a bullet while trying to reach our barraca [barracks]. I knew he wouldn’t make it. He said he couldn’t walk. He took the chain he had around his neck and his ring and asked for them to be delivered to his sister in Bolama. I don’t remember the name of this man anymore … suddenly I heard a gunshot; I think they saved him from more suffering…. These things leave marks! They buried him, and we continued on our way. We were hungry.28
