Repeat the exercise as described above, by showing your dog the low value treat in one hand, saying “leave it” and giving her the extra good food from the other hand if she responds correctly. Once that has gone well at least twice, stand up and face your dog, and show her another low value treat. Say “leave it,” but this time toss it a few feet behind you. Be sure that you give the verbal cue. before you throw the treat, that’s one of the details that’s especially important. It’s much harder for a dog to stop going forward once they’re halfway there, so give her a chance to be right, and say “leave it,” clearly and firmly before she’s motivated to dash to the treat.
