Chapter 27: Trial and Error

Dan sat in his chair with the printed materials from Diane on his lap. His dinner was finished, his laundry folded and put away, and the sun had vanished behind the western horizon. He was alone in his small room. The dead went about their business and left him to his. Dan still felt strange about the time he had spent with Diane, and then the sudden, if brief, confrontation with Jess. Occasionally, the idea that his children were upset with him gnawed at his thoughts, and he was surprised that he was disappointed with himself for disturbing them.

He wanted to be indifferent to their unrealistic expectations and hopes, but he found he couldn’t be. While he prepared to examine the information about Eliza, Dan discovered his thoughts continued to slip back to Aaron and Emily.

I don’t want them sad, he told himself. But I’m not getting back with Jess. That was never an option. I hurt her too much.

The simple understanding that he had hurt his ex-wife, and his children, too, stung him and forced him to close his eyes. Shame over his tears welled up within him, and it took several minutes of deep breathing to calm down. When he finished, his trembling hands caused the papers to shake so violently that they rustled in the stillness of the room.

Great. This is exactly what I need. He looked to his small pile of business cards and mail stacked to the left of his hammock. Dan knew Dr. Lee’s card was there, just as he knew he could call her number, and her answering service would pass any message along to her.

No, he thought, forcing his eyes back to the papers in his hands. I don’t need to bother her about this.

I have Diane’s number, too.

The last thought came as a surprise, and he felt his face redden despite the fact that he was alone in his room.

Best not to think about that, he told himself, and he picked up the first page of information.

It was an article from The Norwich Bulletin dated ten years earlier.
