Chapter 103

At the office, Michael and Carter are listening to what the hidden microphone is transmitting. They’ve listened to the entire conversation between Tobey and his mother about Cate.

“Tobey, Tobey. How did it go? Fine. Fine. Please shut up, Mom,” says Michael, mimicking Tobey and his mother’s voices with a laugh.

“Boss, this boy is a real jock. He thinks he’s Romeo or something.”

Michael laughs, adding, “Yeah, and to think we were worried they have FBI protection. Nope. He’s completely on his own.”

“He didn’t even tell his mother about the water gun,” Carter muses.

Michael raises both of his eyebrows. “He told her the exact opposite of everything. Kids!”

“How is that, boss?”

“He says the girl is weird. That could mean he’s actually into her.” He drifts off in thought for a moment. “And we could use that. The deaf Romeo of Malden.”

Carter lets out a guffaw that nearly chokes him.

Michael thinks about Cate. He doesn’t like that the girl underestimates them. She had already trivialized them when she recorded his guys punishing James.

Michael takes a deep breath that alerts him to his broken nose.

“Carter, why have you let this meddlesome girl live?”

Carter sobers up and stumbles through his words.

“Boss, I didn’t think you . . . I mean, I was under the impression that—”

“Stop your blabbering!” Michael slams his fists against the desk. “I don’t think it’s fair to send this boy to hell alone. It’s time to have the girl join his demise. Now we need a plan.”

“I’m ready for your orders, boss.”

“We’re going to clean house,” Michael sneers. “This won’t stop with our little Romeo and his wannabe Juliet.”

“Who else, boss?” Carter asks nervously.

“I already told you—I want Robert and his family.”

Carter nodded. “Consider it done.”

“Oh, I do. If you fail, there’ll be hell to pay.”

The room goes silent and nothing can be heard but the distant conversation between Tobey and his mother.
