Publishing Seahaven

They say the first million words is practice, and I probably spent most of that on my first book. I wrote it four times, each version with different characters and storylines before I was finally satisfied with it. With a completed manuscript in hand, I felt I finally hit the embryo stage of trying to get published, and I went on a stroll through the internet to learn how.

I found a website that promised to do the impossible—to find a publisher willing to take me on as a client. I filled out the questionnaire and one of the questions had options to choose from about how much I would be willing to invest in my dream. I randomly selected the $3000 option; I figured that should cover editing and cover art, but I really had no idea how the system worked. Before long I got a phone call from a woman filled with the kind of enthusiasm that could only be found in people who make commission from their sales.

The publishing company she worked for just so happened to be running a special—a $3000 package that was perfect for me (later visits of their website revealed the sale ran 12 months of the year) and it included free editing, free cover art (she later slipped by mentioning they just take free-to-use images off the Internet), and so much more. She went on at length about her company's A-rating at the Better Business Bureau. She said all I had to do was send the manuscript and the initial investment, and they would print off the books and send me royalties. The instant she heard hesitation in my voice, she gasped and asked if after all my effort, I was willing to throw away my dream of becoming a published author without even trying. That last line was so good, it almost convinced me to write her a check.

I steeled my nerve and told her I didn't want to jump into bed with the first publisher I talked to, and she agreed to call me back in a few days after I thought more about it. I spent that time researching her company, and I read thousands of people's feedback—almost all of it was negative. According to the reviews, not only does this company NOT edit your work, they put more errors in. Obvious errors, like spelling your name wrong on the cover. When you call back to get it fixed, they demand more money from you to get the copy editor to fix it. They demand money for advertising, for changing their own mistakes, for proofreading, for everything they can think of. Once they're done bleeding you for every penny they can, they sell your book and keep most of the royalties. A few authors mentioned that many of their friends and family bought copies of their books online, and the publishing company claimed they sold only one or two copies, or none.

Needless to say, I didn't send any money and, more importantly, I didn't send my manuscript.
