The last of the mob disappeared among the trees minutes after Kat left the porch. I hadn’t done anything beyond stand there with her phone, and they’d cleared out as though they’d been chased away. The terror in their eyes made my skin crawl—not only because of what they might have imagined was chasing them, but because of what their abrupt exodus might mean for the people inside.

Free from my promise to protect the house, I stepped through the mist in my hurry to get to Kat.

I returned to the world just in time to watch a red-eyed Rhys extend his hand towards her. My stomach dropped, and without giving myself time to think, I pulled her through the mist and out of his reach. We popped up a few feet away. For half a breath, my vision went murky and I experienced an odd sensation, like something inside me had gone numb.

Everything returned to normal as Rhys came at me, hands out. At the last moment, he realized his error, turned on his heel and fled. The shadows of the trees consumed him until all sign of his red hair was gone.

Kat launched herself after him, but I grabbed her shoulder and jerked her back. Her eyes were blue fire when she turned on me, but I didn’t back down. “You think he’ll be satisfied with Rhys? If you give him the smallest chance, he’ll kill the kid and take you.”

I refused to let her go until my words sank in. I wouldn’t let her take that risk on herself, no matter what it cost her to watch him flee.

In the breaths that passed, I considered the strange feeling I’d had, and a coil of unease wrapped around my heart. A quick assessment showed nothing of me missing that I noticed, but that didn’t mean nothing had been traded for my decision to save Kat. I’d lost enough fragments of myself over the centuries but it had been a long time since I felt it happen. Did that mean the pieces I traded were getting larger? More significant? Or was the problem that I had so few pieces left to give that they were becoming more obvious.

I couldn’t worry about it just yet, not while the woman I loved was on the verge of breaking down in my arms, but I couldn’t afford to disregard it, either.

It took a few breaths, but Kat’s body sagged with defeat as she accepted I was right. She nodded, and I released her, ready to go after her if this was a feint.

Tears sprang into her eyes, and she turned to Maera. “I am so sorry. I made you a promise, and I let you down. Again. But we’ll get him back. I won’t stop until we do.”

Maera stared in the direction Rhys had gone, her face slack and her hand half-raised as though pleading with her son to come home. I worried what it would do to her if he never did. I sympathized with the woman.
