Chapter Eight

I opened my eyes and held up a hand to block the sunlight that cut through the rows of pine trees and blinded me in bursts as we drove. The familiar smell of exhaust from this tank of a car surrounded me. Air still blasted from the vents, but Tony had rolled down his window and propped his arm on the door. He still wore the black outfit—jeans, a long-sleeved shirt, and gloves that gripped the steering wheel where his right hand rested on the bottom rim.

With his left hand, he tapped a steady beat as if the radio actually worked. I peered closer and noticed a thin wire that dropped from his ear into his shirt.

“What are you listening to?”

He jumped a little and pulled out the earbud. “Mostly rock, but I’ll listen to anything with a good beat.”

“No wonder you don’t need a radio. Isn’t that illegal?”

He shrugged. “I only keep one ear in while I’m driving. I suppose the police could pull me over.”

I noticed two drinks in the cup holder between us, both sweating. “You probably wouldn’t be worried.”

“Not likely.” He pointed to the drink on my side. “I got you a coke when I stopped for gas. You look like you could use a cold drink.”

Tony—no he wasn’t Tony. His name was Travis Payne. He wasn’t a student at Palm County, he was… I wasn’t quite sure. All he’d told me was that he worked for someone who knew Dad from the Army. His job was to protect me, which would explain why he kept a loaded gun in his glove box.

I would have found our whole situation impossible to believe, except that my dad left town with a terrorist who was determined to find me. And Travis had picked me up in front of the office, ready to speed out of town. It all seemed a little too perfect.

“Who did you say you worked for?”

“I didn’t.”

As I took a sip of the drink and thought of what to ask next, a wonderful smell made my stomach growl. I looked around for the smell, which reminded me of the burger place Dad took us on special occasions. They had a junior burger, but I’d never ordered it. I always got the Beef Willy, which came with two slices of cheese. “Did you get lunch?”

Travis grinned. “I thought you might appreciate a good burger. No wheat bread, I promise.”

He got points for remembering my utter disdain for eating healthy. Well, for eating healthy when it came to beef at least. “Where are we?”

“One of Florida’s largest national forests.”

“We’re still in Florida?” I asked with disappointment.

“I told you we’ve got to fly under the radar.”

“Don’t you mean drive under the radar?”

He laughed. “I never thought you’d be joking at a time like this. Running away from everything you’ve ever known has got to suck.”

“I’m trying not to think about it.”

“Understood.”

“How long before we stop?”

Travis glanced at his watch. “A good forty-five minutes.”

“You’re killing me. That burger is making me feel like I haven’t eaten in weeks.
