Sexuality and Sexual Violence

The gendered socialization of men and women, and the definitions and understanding of womanhood and manhood establish their positions of power and control at home and in society. These same norms governing gender power relations influence how violence against women and girls is viewed and tolerated in different (social) contexts.23

In my interactions/interviews with professional women and men during fieldwork, it was interesting how linkages emerged between gender roles, sexuality and sexual violence against women. In the given social, militarized structure that is predominantly conservative, religious and patriarchal, it was pointed out that a strong gender bias prevailed in society. According to a woman doctor:

Men are different here [in our society]. Religion plays a role, it is a closed society where gender bias prevails. Boys, men and women are groomed into believing that women have to be respected and, therefore, rape and sexual assault are not socially acceptable. Women play an important role in family and in society and they are worth dying for. If a woman is assaulted, not only her family but also the nation is assaulted. This belief is ingrained in our society and culture.
