CHAPTER NINE

“There are other thunderbirds,” Tilly told them all, watching for their reactions. “More thunderbird shifters, in fact, than have been alive at one time since the Dark Ages. The shaman says our numbers have increased for a reason. He’s been telling us for a long time that evil was returning to the world of men. I think maybe I should make a few phone calls and ask some of my extended family to join me up here. If that’s okay with you, Alpha.” She looked at John, seeking his permission. “This feels like the time and place we, as a group, can be the most help.”

“It feels that way to me too,” Gus spoke into the silence from the other side of the table. “There have been tales among the Nations for a long time about thunderbirds gathering to defeat their natural enemies. I wasn’t sure until yesterday. I thought it might just be a legend, and the truth would fall far short. I’m sorry I doubted you, Tilly.” Gus nodded to her respectfully then turned his gaze to his Alpha. “If you want my advice, John, you’ll get them up here before we make any big push. They were born to fight evil under water. There can be no doubt of their character. They serve the Great Spirit by their very nature, if that has you at all concerned.”

John looked grim but nodded. “Thank you, Gus. That’s good to know. And thank you, also, Tilly, for suggesting this course of action. I think we’d better adjourn for a few minutes to let Tilly make a few calls, then we’ll reconvene when we know more about who might be able to get here on short notice.” With a final nod, he stood and walked over to Tilly and Jim.

Everyone had gotten up to stretch. They’d been talking for a while without a break, so this recess was welcome.

“Do your people have a leader of any kind?” John asked Tilly quietly as everyone else milled around, some leaving the room entirely.

Tilly nodded. “Grandmother Claw,” she answered at once. “She taught most of us, and we all look up to her. I’d planned to call her first.”

“I’d like to speak with her,” Big John told her, his voice serious and unyielding.

Tilly understood this was not a request, but rather the command of an Alpha bear whose territory was about to be intruded upon by even more shifters of a type he hadn’t even known about forty-eight hours ago.

“Of course,” Tilly replied at once. “Can we use your office? It’ll be quieter.”

John led the way out of the conference room and into his office. Tilly took out her cellphone and placed the call.

“Tilly, my dear, how are you?” Grandmother Claw asked as soon as she answered the phone.

“I’m well, Grandmother. Forgive me, I’m sitting with someone who would like to speak with you. He is the Alpha grizzly mayor of a town besieged by sea serpents. I was drawn here and have already fought one battle with the creatures.
