Chapter 15

Tala

I rub my shoulder as I step out of the car, glad that I finally found some make up to hide the bruise on my wrist and annoyed that it still won’t heal. Even after Changing to heal this bruised shoulder after school, the long, finger-like bruises remain a stubborn deep eggplant color.

“I can’t believe they shoved you like that.” Ruelle slams the car door.

“It’s only natural they’d come at me too. I’m not untouchable just because the alphas are my parents, Rue,” I grab my backpack from the backseat. “I’m just glad they seemed to leave the younger kids alone. I’ll take a shove into a locker if it means they chose me over someone else.”

“This is ridiculous. They’re just some random pack members, and they’re not even of age. They don’t know the first thing about the Change.”

“Well, to be fair, everyone has been informed since Sasha was discovered, and who knows how much information their parents shared with them.” I shrug.

Rue storms off toward the front door. I smile and shake my head. As I start to head to the house, a black SUV pulls into the driveway, and a man in a slate blue suit steps out of the car.

“Hi, are you Tala?”

“Uh, yes. Can I help you,” I ask, confused. How does he know my name?

“Wonderful. I’m Rafe Mingan, from the Elders Council. I’ve been meaning to speak with you and Ms. Wilk about the information your parents notified us about.” He smiles, falling into step beside me as I walk him to the front door.

“Oh, right. You all work fast,” I say, surprised to see him here already.

“Yes, we do. Especially under these circumstances.” He holds open the door, “After you.”

“Thank you.” I see both my parents sitting on the couch watching TV and Rue at the kitchen counter pouring herself some cereal. “Everyone, this is Rafe.”

“Hello. I’m from the Elders Council, just here to take a report,” he says, as everyone turns to look at him, Dad quickly getting up to shake his hand.

“I didn’t expect you so fast. We just sent out the notification a few hours ago,” he says.

“Ah, yes. We received some other notifications as well and had already been heading down when we received your news,” Rafe explains.

“Please, sit. Make yourself comfortable. Can I get you a cup of coffee,” Mom asks.

“That would be great, thank you,” he says. “If I could have Tala and Ruelle sit with me, so we can talk about everything, that would be appreciated.”

I put my backpack by the stairs and take a seat at the kitchen table, Rue sitting next to me with her bowl of cereal. I roll my eyes. “Really?” I whisper.

“What,” she whispers back and shrugs. “I was hungry.”

My cheeks flame when I look up and catch the gleam in Rafe’s eyes. “So, what I wanted to start off with was what exactly happened. Just your side of the story and all.”

“Well, we’d been in school and had to
