Awake at Last

When I awakened next, I was in the rooms assigned to me by the Suits Department. Only everything was different now. I felt the power of the Gods pulsing in my veins once again. How had I managed to survive in that primitive human body?

I shuddered to think about the different punishments that Brigid and I had been subjected to. Honestly, I wasn’t sure who had been given the worst punishment. While I had to live on earth, I hadn’t known anything different. The gods taking my memory and powers had been something of a tender mercy even though I would never admit it to them.

Guilt hung heavily over me like a cloak I couldn’t shed. With the memories came the realization that every time Brigid and I had been caught messing around, it had been at my instigation.

I had to be the biggest selfish bastard in the universe. Shame filled me along with a good dose of remorse. How could I have done that to someone I professed to care about?

I could still picture her that day at the fountain of eternal waters. She had been surprised that I had gone in after her. I knew Brigid couldn’t swim. She’d honestly believed that I would abandon her.

What a first class fuck up I’d become.

“Are you awake?”

I jumped at hearing her voice in the darkness of my room.

“Yeah,” I said groggily, leaning over to turn on the light.

Brigid sat in a chair across the room. She wasn’t at ease, as I would’ve hoped. Instead she sat, back ramrod straight, and toes tapping nervously.

“I suppose you have questions,” she began.

“You are the Celtic Goddess of Fertility and Motherhood.”

She nodded. “Although, it’s been quite some time since I have gone by my official title.”

“Because of me,” I said.

Brigid paused. “No, I made my choices and faced those consequences. Thanks to my loving brother Zeus, we both did. It has been a long time since I have seen my brother. But I have no doubts that our actions aren’t closely monitored.”

“The Fates?” I answered.

She nodded. “I have worked with them for a while now. The only thing I have learned is that the moment you think you understand them, they turn everything on its head. You cannot trust them.”

“And what now? Do we go on working in the department as if nothing has happened? Is there an expiration date to our punishment?”

“I don’t know,” Brigid replied, shrugging. “I never anticipated they would send you to me. But they did.”

“One of the Fates said that our destinies were entwined,” I recalled. “But the third one said that we had lost that privilege.”

Brigid frowned. “I never should have kissed you yesterday.”

That had me coming to my feet. I walked over to where she was sitting and knelt before her. I was aware of the picture it created. The god that I had been would never have put himself in such a vulnerable position.

However, the god that I had been was not who I wanted to be now.
