Chapter 20

Tannon

As we walk back to the apartment, the air surrounding us is heavy—with nerves or lust or perhaps both. I find it amusing that telling Jude that I want to have sex with him slides off my tongue as effortlessly as breathing but having a normal conversation is a challenge.

I suppose it makes sense. Sex is all about chemistry. When two bodies fit together effortlessly, it’s easy. The need takes over. Chasing one’s orgasm is instinct. Yet talking to someone and getting to know him for who he truly is carries stress. More so, it brings out all of my insecurities because what if he decides he doesn’t like me.

We close in on the alleyway that leads to my apartment’s entry door, the metal tables and chairs outside of the Starbucks now in view.

“So remind me again what I’m walking into.” Jude’s voice is light and husky all at once, and despite the innocence in his comment, pebbles form across my skin.

“Well, as I mentioned. It’s me, Cassie, and the guys, and we have a date with reality TV from over a decade ago. We’re bingeing Survivor. I think we’re on season seven. The contestants are in the Pearl Islands. This is going to be weird, isn’t it?” My words come out in rapid succession.

I need to chill.

Jude chuckles beside me and opens the door to the stairwell, holding it for me to pass. “It will be fine, Tannon.”

“Yeah, of course,” I say quickly under my breath. Just fine.

Asher cheers on a football player on the television as we enter. The room buzzes with classic sounds of the game—the voices of the crowd yelling for their team and the deep timbre of the announcer’s calls. The combination of sounds usually lulls me to sleep. Growing up, I could always count on getting a good nap in on the weekend during football season. Watching football was a family event, but no matter how much I wanted to be interested in the sport, I simply wasn’t.

I’m not sleepy tonight, though. I’m full of excitement and nerves, and every emotion between rushes through me as Jude Martinez stands at my side. It doesn’t take long for my friends to realize that I’m not alone. Cassie jumps up from the couch, and Everett mutes the TV. Four sets of eyes stare toward us. Our friend Quinn sits on the sofa. I had forgotten that Cassie invited her over for Survivor night.

“Hey, um…Jude’s going to hang out with us tonight.” I work to keep my demeanor cool, and I think I succeed. Sort of.

“Sweet. How’s it going, man?” Asher addresses Jude.

“Real good,” he answers.

Cassie eyes me, attempting to conceal her grin.

“So, I have ice cream.” I hold up the bag in my hand.

“Yes,” Everett says with a moan and grabs the bag from my grasp before rushing into the kitchen.

“Hey, I know you,” Quinn says to Jude. “Alma’s my best friend. I’ve taken several of your self-defense courses.”

“Yeah.” Jude nods. “I remember. It’s been a while since you’ve been to one.
