The SUV sped along the state highway, the noise of the road barely penetrating the bubble of the vehicle’s interior. In the backseat, Hayden turned her phone over and over in her hands, praying it would ring and terrified Mitch’s voice would be the one on the other end when it did.

“Hey.”

She flinched and glanced toward the seat beside her.

Connor gave her an insistent look. “They’ll call. You’ll see.”

Swallowing hard, Hayden nodded. “Yeah. They—”

The phone chimed with her dad’s ringtone.

“Hey, Dad, are you okay?” she answered, the words coming out in a rush.

“What in the world is going on, honey?” her father demanded. “Are you okay?”

A relieved breath escaped her. “Yeah, I’m all right.”

“What’s going on, Hayden? Lindy’s here, saying we need to pack our bags and leave immediately?”

She pressed a hand to her eyes, still at a loss for how to explain this to them, and then cast a desperate glance to Connor and Wes.

“Whatever you want to tell them,” Connor offered gently.

A constricted feeling seemed to loosen in her chest. He gave her a small smile. Up front, the radio clicked on, the sound low.

“Give you some privacy,” Wes added.

The constricted feeling faded even more. “Um, yeah. Listen, Dad, there’s…there’s some people after me. Bad people. They—”

“Hayden.” Her mother’s voice cut her off, sounding farther away like she was on speakerphone. “Are these…certain kinds of people?”

“They’re not wolves, Mom. They, um…they kill wolves. But…” She drew a relieved breath as the road turned ahead, revealing the gate that led onto the manor property. “If you’ll please just go with Lindy, I have a safe place where—”

A click came from the phone. Her brow furrowing, she turned, glancing to the screen in confusion.

The call had dropped.

What the hell? Fear clamored in the back of her mind, throwing horrific scenarios at her. They were hurt. He’d found them.

Her hand shaking, she clicked the icon to dial them back, only for the cell to inform her it had no signal. Clicking the screen off and on again changed nothing. Neither did trying to call anyway, just in case the device was mistaken.

A shaky breath left her. This…this couldn’t be Mitch. What could he have done, blown up the cell towers?

Maybe. Or maybe it was something about this property, instead.

“Um…” She looked around. A long cobblestone drive waited beyond the gate, sheltered by tall trees and winding up toward where she knew the manor lay. “Do you guys have something that stops calls here?”

“Huh?” Wes turned his head toward them, still keeping his eyes on the road.

“The call ended, and I don’t have any signal.”

Connor gave her a confused look. “Maybe it’s a fluke. We shouldn’t have anything that—”

A buzzing alert came from the radio, the sound faint due to how low Wes had turned the dial. Glancing back at them both, he raised the volume.

“—of the Emergency Alert System. Effective immediately, a shelter-in-place order has been issued for all counties in the listening area. Residents are instructed to shelter in place until further notice.
