The same scene was repeated five times over the following four days. Every time Kalish arrived at a spring, there were warriors waiting to drive her away. Each time, they drove her closer and closer to the mountains. She was making no progress toward Point Clan territory, and the terrain was becoming more and more forbidding. She was desperately thirsty, chewing sugarspike leaves to relieve the dryness in her mouth, though they gave little moisture.

She needed water, and her enemies knew it. They didn’t bother to pursue her cross-country, because eventually she’d be caught at a spring or she’d die of thirst. On the morning of the fifth day since her escape from Surefoot’s prime terrace, Kalish climbed a rocky slope, her head pounding and her vision swimming from dehydration. At the top, she was surprised to see the slope continued on. From her vantage point, she could see it was part of a ridge that rose up and into the mountains.
