By the time night came around, exhaustion pulled at every square inch of me.

Isla and I had talked for hours, sharing the many experiences we’d had during our time apart. We cried together. Laughed together. And when I’d told her about my soulmate bond with Lochlan, we’d unapologetically swooned together.

But not before she’d crowed, “I knew it!”

Even after I’d insisted she couldn’t have possibly known, she wouldn’t take back the words. I’d then spent the next several minutes trying and failing to dodge her probing questions about our sex life. In the end, she knew way too much and was one giddy-looking girl because of it.

I’d stayed with her while she transitioned into her vampire form, watching her pale skin become the darkest of blacks. When the transformation was complete, I’d barely recognized her. But when she showed me her black claws and said, “Aren’t these bad boys the coolest?” I knew she was still my Isla.

Promising to visit her before the night was over, I’d then headed to a meeting. Apparently a secret one, held in a soundproofed room attached to the king’s private office. Only the king, his sons, Kade, and I had attended. Noah hadn’t been invited, as the king didn’t want Headmistress Mayweather to know about it.

More and more, I wondered if the new council he’d put together was a sham, only meant to appease Clarice so she’d hand me over to him without a fuss. That or including her had been part of their pactum agreement. Either way, he was most definitely the one in control. He’d grilled us for hours, wanting to know about everything that had happened since the night of the masquerade ball.

The entire time, I’d struggled to keep my composure, terrified that one of Lochlan’s brothers would blurt about our soulmate bond and doom us both. But they hadn’t, even going so far as to gloss over the details of the time Lochlan and I had spent at the cabin—almost as if they’d rehearsed their stories ahead of time.

By the time the meeting—more like interrogation—was over, I desperately needed sleep. Especially since there was another more official meeting scheduled for the next morning. Still, I checked on Noah and Silver, then Isla, making sure they had what they needed before heading to my old room.

The room I hadn’t even slept in.

The room King Ambrose insisted was safe for me to stay in.

Alone.

Not that I expected him to be okay with me sleeping in Lochlan’s room, but still. Whoever had laced their drinks with silver could still be in the castle. Who knew when and where they’d strike next. And maybe, instead of calling the SCA to infiltrate the castle again, they’d ally with the rogues.

I knew the king wasn’t shortsighted when it came to safety, but letting me sleep in a room by myself seemed like a recipe for disaster.

“I’m not letting you stay here unprotected,” Lochlan suddenly said, breaking into my thoughts. “I’ll stand guard from the hallway. And I want you to drink a vial of my blood every day.
