Raiden sat with his back to the pool in the cavern beneath the hollow as Meg and I stripped down to our birthday suits and waded into the water. Thankfully, most of the pool was shaded by the high cavern walls, protecting Meg and Caly from the sun’s toxic touch.

I was really, really glad Raiden was turned away because Meg’s body was amazing. Athletic and lean, with curves everywhere they should be. Though I was at least seven or eight years her senior, standing beside Meg, I felt like Skipper standing next to Barbie.

Peri wouldn’t have felt insecure, which I realized was totally insane because Peri and I literally had the same body. This version may not have been as well-honed as her last, but the exact same genetic pattern created it, and it wasn’t like I never exercised. I worked out regularly. Or, at least, semi-regularly.

Fine, I rarely “worked out” but I was fairly active. For a gamer.

Peri had a bone-deep sense of confidence and absolute security with herself and her place in the world. She was a psychic warrior in the Order of Amazons. She was the baddest of the badasses, and few warriors—even among the Amazons—could stand against her. How the apple had fallen so far from the tree was beyond me, but it had fallen, rolled, bouncing and bruising, and ended up in an entirely different orchard.

I washed quickly, not lazing about in the pool like I had the last time, and I scraped off as much of the water as I could with my hands before slipping into the hoplon suite. The channels running the length of the suit lit up with a subtle amber glow the instant I picked it up, matching the stone in my activated regulator. The suit slid on easily despite the stickiness of wet skin, and it quickly wicked away the remaining moisture.

I turned my attention to Caly, who was leaning against the cavern wall in the deepest, darkest patch of shade, arms crossed over her chest. Raiden lounged on a boulder nearby, prepping some MREs for an impromptu picnic. Unlike Raiden, who was giving Meg and me some privacy, Caly’s glare never left Meg.

“Fiona seems like our best bet to fix the holodisk,” I said, returning to a subject we had touched on only briefly before retreating to the cavern. “Unless you suddenly remember some secret holodisk repair machine you guys have stashed away down there, Caly…”

Caly finally tore her glare away from Meg and met my eyes. “There’s nothing like that,” she said, lowering her arms. She pushed away from the wall and started pacing, pausing every few steps to kick a stray pebble or scraggly shrub. “At least, not that we know about.” She put a little more force behind her next kick, beheading a delicate white flower. “Hades didn’t exactly share all the Olympian tech with us. There’re entire buildings we don’t enter because their purpose is a mystery.”

I nodded lazily as Caly’s words confirmed my understanding of the situation.
