Chapter Thirteen

“Oh God, oh God, what do we do?” Reagan screeched, frantically dialing on her phone.

Winona started the car. Her senses of protecting herself and her friends prevailed, but not enough to take off running for Naomi. She couldn’t help without knowing where Naomi or the bear had gone.

“You can’t leave Naomi.”

“I don’t plan on leaving. I’m just getting the car ready, and moving closer. I’m going to try to move as close as I can and start honking. We’ve got to do something to scare the bear. Dammit.” She banged her hands on the steering wheel. “I knew I should have brought my shotgun. I can’t believe I didn’t.”

“Garret won’t answer,” Reagan cried. “The call isn’t going through. The line is nothing but static.”

Winona could tell Reagan was about to panic. Winona put the car in gear, but it only coughed and sputtered. She stomped on the gas, but the tires only dug through the mud.

“Shit. We’re stuck.” Winona bit back anxious tears. She felt guilty they were in the safety of the vehicle with Naomi nowhere to be seen.

The bear—she thought it was the same bear—made its way to their campsite and started chomping away at the sausage. She didn’t see blood on him, so hopefully that meant he hadn’t mauled Naomi before coming here. Winona considered honking the horn, but Naomi was safer with the bear here.

“Garret?” Reagan cried, her voice marinated with panic. “Thank God you answered. We’re stuck at our campsite, the mud and all, and Naomi is being chased by a bear and we’re inside the car we don’t know where she is.” Her words clustered between layers of clarity and delusion.

“Calm down,” Winona heard Garret say. “I can’t understand you.”

“Winona and I are sitting in the car.”

“Where are you?” he asked.

“We’re stuck in the mud. A bear came up. Naomi ran. I don’t know where she is.” Reagan cried too heavily to make any sense, so Winona grabbed the phone.

“Garret?” Winona asked. Vicious static pierced the line. She wasn’t sure if Garret could hear her anymore.

“Where are you?” he asked again.

Winona carefully modulated her voice, speaking low and loud, calm and sure, as she explained where they were and why.

Garret’s curse clawed through the static, his anger unmistakable. Winona had to pull the phone away from her ear to hear what he said.

“Stay inside the car. Do not, under any circumstances, go outside. You got that?”

“Got it,” Winona said. “Garret? Garret?” The call ended. She glanced at the phone. No bars.

Reagan snatched the phone.

“We don’t have a signal,” Winona said.

Every ounce of her training as private investigator boiled down to this moment, where control was of the ultimate importance. Her body shook with fear, cold seeping into her bones like the mark of death. She blasted the heater, the clamminess of her skin welcome.

“There’s Naomi!” Reagan screeched, heading for the door handle.

Winona stopped her. “Wait until she gets closer. Don’t open the door yet. The bear is eating. He hasn’t seen her.”

Naomi tiptoed through the mud, her eyes strictly on the bear.
