Chapter Nineteen

Jessica sat beside Jon’s hospital bed for the second time in the past year, waiting for him to wake. Far too often for her liking. Tonight, thanks to Adam, she’d found Jon in time. He had a mild case of hypothermia but would be fine once the sedative wore off.

Two feds, one male and one female, were stationed outside the door. They’d quieted the doctor who’d wanted to contact the local police after seeing the illegal sedative in Jon’s lab results. Jessica agreed as Jon had killed someone in their backyard. The fewer the people that knew that tidbit, the better.

After Adam’s warning to stay away from the hospital, the FBI presence comforted. But why did Sam send two agents instead of one? When she asked, they said they were still investigating. But investigating what was the question. Henson had to be the dead guy in the yard. Who else could it have been? Maybe the feds feared Henson had shared their location with Hugh Jones?

A short female nurse with her hair pulled back in a severe bun came into the room. “Hello. I’m checking his vitals. They’re fantastic. You doing okay? All this must be stressful for you and the baby.”

Jessica instinctively wrapped her arms around her stomach. “We’re fine.”

“Are you sure? I have a friend who’s a nurse in the maternity ward. She could give you a quick exam. Listen to the baby’s heart with a Doppler.”

Jessica shrugged. Better safe than sorry. “It couldn’t hurt, I guess. We can take one of the guards with us.”

“Are you in some kind of danger?”

“We could still be, yes.”

“Oh, dear. Well, let’s make sure you and that baby are healthy. Follow me.”

The nurse led her out of the room. Jessica had her bearings from her last appointment with her obstetrician. The maternity ward was a few floors up. The female federal agent followed them down the corridor, making sure the elevator was empty before she’d allow them on. They rode to the third floor in awkward silence. The door opened, then the nurse led them around the corner to a hallway filled with exam rooms.

She stopped at the last one and ushered Jessica inside. “Go on in. I’ll find my friend.” She disappeared around the corner.

The agent held her arm out. “Wait. I need to clear the room first before you go in there. Walk in behind me.”

Jessica swallowed around a lump in her throat. What does she know that she isn’t telling me?

The agent pulled the privacy curtain shut. “It’s clear. You’ll be fine in here.”

Jessica sat on the edge of the exam table. “You’ll be outside the door, right?”

“Of course. I won’t let you out of my sight.”

“Can you please tell me what’s going on? It wasn’t hard to figure out you were assigned to protect me, and your colleague’s been assigned to Jon. Something must be wrong.”

“I’m not supposed to say anything. Sorry.”

Jessica bit her lip to keep in what she really wanted to say— It’s my life, I have a right to know what’s going on—and instead tried a gentler tactic.
