There have been too many fathers buried in poplar tree neckties,

too many mothers in hangman’s pearls,

for me to be run from my own home,

for me to laugh at the corpse this privileged girl has split open

and worn like a party dress,

for me to quiet the rhythm in my blood,

for me to still be a tragedy,

to be anything less than a screaming revolt.

HOARDER

In Texas there is a woman who let despair eat her whole house.

Built a mausoleum of dime store romance novels

on her late husband’s side of the bed.

The bed they shared for over 30 years.

This mausoleum had to be dismantled by strangers with snow shovels

after the neighbors complained about the strong stench of sorrow

wafting from the house on a high wind

and the way it lowered their property value.

How could she let it get so bad?
