The Gift

This story was contributed by a crew member who still flies to this day.

Shengyi, a Chinese flight stewardess, was doing her rounds of the first and business class cabins, introducing herself to the Chinese passengers. It was a routine she did, never mind that she was stationed in the economy class section. As an act of courtesy, she always made it a point to greet and introduce herself to the Chinese passengers onboard before the flight took off.

On one flight, Shengyi went to greet Mr Chen, a sixty-two-year-old gentleman. The instant she laid her eyes on the elderly Chinese man, she was drawn to him the way iron shavings are to a magnet. There was something about this elderly gentleman that appealed to Shengyi. It was not that he was one of the richest men in China. It was something else. They exchanged greetings and Shengyi went back to the economy class cabin to carry on with her duties. Nothing more happened on that flight.

It was later in the year that Shengyi met Mr Chen again on a flight from Singapore to Beijing. On that flight, Mr Chen asked for Shengyi to go to the first class cabin on a few occasions. All he wanted to do was to chat with her. He liked her and somehow he felt that the feeling was mutual. In their conversations, he found out more about Shengyi, her family and her goals in life.

Shengyi was married and lived in Beijing. Her husband, Allan, was her classmate at school. He was an ordinary office worker and a part-time moderator. They had both planned to continue their education in an American university after Shengyi completed her stint with the airline. They had hoped to save enough money for Shengyi to pursue her master’s degree and her husband, his bachelor’s degree.

One day, out of the blue, Shengyi received a call from a sales agent from the Mercedes-Benz dealership in Beijing. The agent asked her to go to the showroom to collect the keys to a silver Mercedes Sports Sedan C350. Shengyi was told that it was a gift from an admirer.

Excited, Shengyi and Allan caught a taxi and sped to the downtown Mercedes-Benz office, a place frequented by the rich and famous in Beijing.

The manager presented her the car. Besides the car manual and keys, a sealed envelope was also handed to her. It was a mystery all along as to whom the “admirer” was until Shengyi opened the envelope.

It was from Mr Chen, the first class passenger whom she had met on the flight a while back. There was an invitation for both Shengyi and her husband to go to Mr Chen’s luxurious residence to attend a dinner party the following weekend. Shengyi called to thank Mr Chen for his generosity and kindness.

At the party, Shengyi introduced her husband to Mr Chen and the three of them got along famously. And just when the husband and wife thought the dinner was over and were about
