FUJOSHI (ROTTEN GIRLS) IN A BUTLER CAFÉ IN IKEBUKURO

Ikebukuro is a smaller district than Akihabara and is known as the female counterpart of Akihabara that caters to Fujoshi (Rotten Girls), the female equivalent of Otaku. All the anime- and manga-related stores are on Otome (Princess) Road in East Ikebukuro.

There is a butler café for girls and women where waiters are dressed as English butlers and greet female customers by saying, “Welcome home, Princess!” The café opened in 2006 as a female version of a maid café and it provides psychological comfort to young girls. The customers are treated as princesses. If you want something, you ring a bell on the table, and a butler comes running to fulfill your request. If you need to go the ladies’ room, the butler will carry your bag, take you to the bathroom, and wait for you outside the bathroom. Unlike maid cafés, which are abundant, the butler café in Ikebukuro is exclusive, and reservations are required.

Fujoshi are obsessive about Doujin-shi—self-published manga or novels by amateur artists and writers—and the most popular type of story among Fujoshi is a love story between two good-looking boys. A self-claimed Fujoshi said:

This genre is very popular because it’s an unrealistic world. In real life, you can’t have two really good looking boys falling in love with each other. It’s not real, and that’s why it is portrayed so beautifully. No guy is that good looking in real life. It’s so truly beautiful and romantic, and it’s not sleazy at all.
