"Any final questions before we begin?"
We stood together in front of a mirror larger than a senator's carriage, a strange and bedraggled group of misfits if ever I'd seen one. The wear and fatigue of the past weeks on the road, and especially the last two days, showed plain in every stain of dirt, sweat, and blood on our clothes and faces.
Sheska had remembered seeing the mirror in an antechamber adjacent to the throne room, and set a fast pace as she led us to it. She didn't have to explain why, and no one complained as we kept up with her. The sun was down by the time we'd emerged from the alteriam. I couldn't remember exactly how much time had passed from sundown the night before to the time the ghosts emerged, but I knew we didn't have long.
"Aye, I've a question for you. Who gets to gut you if this doesn't work?"
Magnus had complained about the plan with hardly a pause for breath since we'd left Tyrial's chamber, but he hadn't been able to offer an alternative. He tried to hide it, but I heard genuine fear beneath his angry bravado. I might have felt sorry for him if he'd stopped his grumbling long enough for me to think two thoughts.
"If my spell fails then I will be lost right along with you, so you'll just have to content yourself with that." Alleron maintained his usual smile, but the strain in his voice was clear.
"It will work." I held up my hands to forestall further argument before it began. I didn't know how I'd managed to become the peacemaker of the group. If we'd been seated at a tavern, I probably would have sipped my ale and watched them knock each other's teeth out, but I knew that the only way any of us made it home was to keep working together until we got there. If I'd learned one thing in my brief time here it was that there was little love lost between the mythic races of Danan. If they needed a human without all that baggage to tell them to shut up, then I supposed I would just have to keep volunteering until we were in the clear.
"We survived last time without any planning or preparation. This time we know what's coming, and we'll be ready."
I turned to Alleron and nodded. "Do it."
He returned my nod as a brief look of gratitude flashed across his face. Then he turned his attention to the mirror.
"Everyone focus your gaze on your own reflection. Ignore everything but the lines of your face. Contemplate every hair, every blemish, the smallest detail, as though you were seeing it for the first time."
I followed his instructions as he began to chant in a low voice. I was surprised to discover that the face of the girl in the mirror seemed foreign to me at first. She had the features I had come to know as mine; brown skin, green eyes, nose with a bridge sharp enough to cut glass.
