The dark of winter nighttime was not even lit by stars. Fat flakes of snow came swirling from above, landing with a soft noise across the peak of the Tsu-Khan’s mighty tent. The floor of the tent was bloody snow, kicked hastily aside to bare the earth. A wooden floor had been thrown down to cover up the blood-spattered soil.

The Khan was forever surrounded by his Black guard – ten thousand men in black robes and pitch-painted armour, mounted on steeds as black as night. No man entered the guard without first taking ten heads in battle. No man came to the guard unless he took the Tsu-Khan as his living god. The Black Guards stood still and silent in the snow, parting only to let the Tsu-Khan’s officers approach the sacred tent.

Inside the Tsu-Khan’s tent, there was nothing but the darkness, and a smell of blood. The tent door opened. Guards stood aside as General Gurad entered the tent, threw his sword belt over his shoulder and bowed. His hands were bloody, and his wicked face split wide into a feral smile.

“Holy Person! The army of the Pulski kingdom is scattered to the winds. Our scouts have opened up a road to their capital, Gulay Gudd!”

“Excellent.” The Tsu-Khan sat reading quietly from a volume bound in dark, tanned skin. He put the great book quietly aside. “And their men?”

“There is no resistance. The fugitives must have split up and fled!” The general waved his hand to the west. “Not one rear guard remained to block the route to the west.’

“Then they did not go west.” The Tsu-khan stood. As he moved, a half-seen flicker of ghosts swirled all around him. “If not west, then where?”

“South.” A guard commander grunted, his muzzle bandaged from the fight. “To the north is nothing but the ice sea. They must have turned to the south.”

“Towards Kakuzan.” The Tsu-Khan looked to the south quietly, and then held out his arms. Men brought him an over robe, and brought him his daggers and his sword.

“Gurad? Our guests are secure?”

“Secure, you Holiness.”

“Good.” The Khan resumed his seat, bringing the black book close. “Then bring them here, Gurad – and we shall begin to twist the screws.”

The general bowed and gave a slow, wicked smile.
