GETTY UP, PETTY PONY

Haut’s hold on my legs tightens. “Put your hands down. They’re not weapons.”

“You don’t know that. I could be a kung fu fighter.” I chop the top of his head, then wince when a sliver drives deeper into my hand. “Ow.”

“Your skills leave me shaking in my boots.” Haut raises his voice. “Can you turn the light somewhere else, please? You’re blinding the karate champion of Hartford Cove.”

“Kung fu.” I squint through the blinding brightness. “Is that Mel’s mom?”

“And a whole bunch of other witches.” Owen lifts a hand to shield his eyes. “I guess the cavalry arrived.”

“Ros was the cavalry,” I correct. “These are the backup band, and they’re late.”

The light swings away from us, and Hawthorne strides forward, her flowy witch’s garb replaced by form-hugging black leather pants and a black turtleneck sweater. Her blond hair wraps in a braid around her head, forming a crown atop her stern face.

“Where is my daughter?” she demands. “I felt her wand splitter. Is she alive?”

“Oh, yeah, she’s fine.” I hold out my wounded hand. “That was me who splintered the wand. Sorry. I hope it wasn’t a family heirloom.”

Her golden brows sweep together. “You used another witch’s wand? And you broke it?”

I tuck my hand away. “No?”

Crow appears beside her, coalescing out of thin air in a cloud of white. “We can investigate the how of that later, my love. First, our daughter.”

“She’s in the clinic, recovering after using a lightning bomb to help take down a large group of rogue vampires.” I point over my shoulder toward the clinic. “It’s only thanks to her that so many of us survived, and half of those are dying of silver poisoning as we speak.”

I narrow my eyes at them. “Our town was nearly destroyed, and the barrier that protected Hartford Cove is gone. Just so we’re clear, the paranormal police’s ability to protect its people sucks. One star rating.”

Hawthorne stiffens, but dips her head in acknowledgment. “We will take things from here and see that the people who attacked your town are put in prison.” She sweeps a hand down the street. “We are containing them now.”

I follow her gesture and see more leather pants-wearing witches taking the guns away from Ros’s people. “Hey, what are you doing? Those aren’t the bad guys! Those are—”

“Rowe!” Ros bursts out of the clinic behind us. “Why does everyone in there smell like your blood? What did you do?”

A wand appears in Hawthorne’s hand. “Get back, foul beast!”

Crow’s pale eyes widen. “Wait...”

Growls rise from Haut, and Owen moves to stand in front of Ros, shadows bubbling from his skin.

I reach up to pull my bulletproof bunny-eared hood over my head. “Stop pointing your wand at my mate, Mel’s mom, or I’m going to get a lot less friendly.”

“I am High Priestess Hawthorne of the West Coast Trinity, young lady,” Hawthorne snaps.

I lift my chin in defiance. “We’ll stick to Mel’s mom, for now, because I’m struggling to find anything else redeemable about you.
