Chapter Thirteen

“All of my boobs are going to come out. This is ridiculous.” I hadn’t even looked in the mirror yet. Maya had me try on at least a hundred dresses, all of them short and tight, and each one whispered to me exactly how uncomfortable the night would be with them on my body. They also murmured about my shape and how it would take a miracle to find one to fit me.

“How many do you have in there?” Maya laughed at me.

“From what I can see right now, it’s a baker’s dozen all stuffed into a box made for only one cookie. Are you sure these parties are so…formal?”

Maya asked me to stop talking after that and just trust her.

I let the app on my phone lead me to a neighborhood that made a few things click in my head. First, no wonder Rimmon had called our rental house a dump. It looked like a shack made out of scrap wood compared to…this mansion. Two, I might be a little bit snotty if I lived here.

I circled the place three times before a man in black pants, a white shirt, and a bow tie came up and knocked on my window.

“Yeah?” I asked, pushing the button to let it down. He looked at my car like it was a relic or something. I’d dropped my mom off at work, and she was going to get a ride home with a friend.

“Are you with the Griffith party?” he asked, taking a long gander at my dress, which was halfway up my thighs. Damn you, Maya.

“Yes.”

He cleared his throat and managed to put on a smile. “Do you happen to have your invitation?”

“Hold on. I think it’s in my bag.” Snapping open the tiny purse Maya claimed matched my dress, I pulled out the invitation with shaking hands. This oddly felt like one of those teen movies where the outcast was invited to a party only to be made fun of. My heels hadn’t even touched the property, and already I felt out of place and out of my mind.

I never should’ve come here.

It was a mistake.

I should just shut the window and drive home.

Maya would get a tongue-lashing for encouraging this.

“I see this is a personal invitation from Mr. Griffith himself. Please excuse my rudeness. I can take your car from here.” The man stood to full height, and there were some sign-language-type motions from him to another man who was waiting by the house. “James is coming over to escort you in.”

I waved my hands after throwing my car into park. “No, that’s not necessary. I can walk myself in.”

Plus, the last freaking thing I wanted was to garner more attention. Just the thought of going to the party trickled fear down my spine. It would be one of those moments where everyone turned and the music stopped completely.

I’d rather eat pinecones after a root canal.

“Miss, it is necessary. Orders from Rimmon. Please, at least allow James to walk you up to the house.
