CHAPTER 10

“What do you mean she’s back in the Fae Realm?” Tyler demanded.

Helen and I had taken Rola in and I had helped walk her through the process of getting rebonded by the National Paranormal Bond Association.

Rola assured me she could find someone to help her get back home.

Again, I heaved a sigh of relief—this time that I wasn’t going to have to go rescue her cat, after all.

Then I gathered my body receipt and took it over to turn it in and collect our money. It wasn’t much—$200—and I split it with Helen.

After that, I’d made the perhaps unwise decision to drop by Tyler’s place in person to let him know what I’d learned about Jessamine’s disappearance.

“You asked me to find out what happened to her, and I did.”

Tyler gave me a narrow-eyed glare. “Yeah. But this doesn’t count.”

“What do you mean it doesn’t count? She’s in the Fae Realm and she will be at the Winter Court Ball in two days.”

I decided not to mention the whole thing about time possibly running differently over there. It wasn’t like Tyler wasn’t distressed enough already. And that kind of news might make him less likely to pay me what he promised.

“It doesn’t count unless you actually set eyes on her,” Tyler insisted. Then his face took on a crafty expression that I recognized from high school.

I had totally forgotten this side of him. It’s amazing what not seeing someone for five years can do to your memory—like make it all smudgy and happy, make you forget how manipulative someone could be.

Physically, Tyler hadn’t changed much since high school. He was still a rangy cowboy, complete with a Stetson hat and scuffed boots, button-fly Levi’s, and a jeans jacket over a black T-shirt. Apparently, he’d remained the same in other ways, too.

“No,” I said. “Whatever you are about to suggest, the answer is no.”

“I can pay you more.”

I paused. “How much more?”

“Five thousand total.”

“For what exactly?”

“Get me into the ball to see her.”

I shook my head. “This is a terrible idea, Tyler.”

“Why? Because the Winter Fae hate humans? I already know that. I know what I’m getting into.”

Shit, shit, shit. I knew I shouldn’t do this. It really was a terrible idea. Tyler was going to get himself killed over there.

I meant to turn him down flat, but when I opened my mouth, what came out was, “You pay half now, half after you get back, whether she comes with you or not.”

“I’ll pay the first half when you get me an invitation to the ball.”

“There are physical invitations?”

He nodded. “Jessamine told me all about it. Get me an invite and I’ll go talk to her myself. And then I’ll pay you the rest of your fee when I get back.”

“Even if she stays behind?”

“No matter what happens,” he said with a nod.

“Agreed,” I said, sticking my hand out to shake on it.
