Chapter 23

The first trimester - what can I say about the first trimester? I was as sick as a poisoned dog. I called, or stopped by, Dr. Lorenzo’s office daily seeking new cures for my nausea.

Note, the saltine cracker is neither new nor a cure for nausea, and platitudes like 'This too shall pass' only create feelings of homicidal rage in the breeding woman.

I was so sick, in fact, that I was legitimately unable, instead of just unwilling, to manage the fifty mile drive out to Corona.

Moreover, I was beginning to think I would never have to see her again because the book was rolling. It was my first book. There should have been troubles with the writing, but from the moment I opened my Word program and started to type, it came. The book, which was tentatively titled 'Susan/Sadie: The Two Faces of a Killer', was a fact-based, heavily researched, work that I also modestly believed was at the same time an edge-of-your-seat thriller.

Jack showed the first three chapters to the publisher and I was the proud possessor of a contract and even received an advance against sales. This was to be used, I guess, for research and any trips I needed to make for interviews. But in this brave new age of search sites, my research trips were no farther than upstairs to my study and Google.

Oh, I was planning site visits to Del Cielo, the Barker and Spahn ranches, as well as maybe a trip up to Folsom to meet old Charlie if he would agree to see me, but at the present I was too sick and miserable to even plan these trips. For the most part, I thought face-to-face visits would just be icing on the cake. The Manson Family and their crimes were Southern California based and all information was at my disposal via the internet. Sure, the book was primarily about the life and times of little Susie Sunshine Atkins, but frankly, after two visits with her, I felt I had her number and her voice. Certainly I had enough for a three hundred page quickie bestseller.

Ethan and I were doing pretty much okay in those days. I say 'pretty much' because while he was trying so damn hard to be solicitous and display the patience of Job regarding my mood swings, constant vomiting and total despair about what seemed to me a grotesque weight gain - fifteen pounds in three short months! - I responded to his kindness either by acting like a screeching bitch or sobbing out hysterical apologies, yet he maintained his composure no matter what.

I had my moments of happiness about the pregnancy, of course I did. I was looking forward to seeing my son born. My first sonogram wasn’t scheduled until the start of my fourth month but I knew with reason-defying certainty that it was a boy. Even Manson himself in that dream, the dream I had the night I found out I was pregnant, referred to my baby as 'he'.
