The sun was dipping down below the horizon, casting a deep red hue over the water. Mia peered out at Whisper Rock, remembering the night of the bonfire party when she'd seen the strange lightning. Would there be lighting like that tonight? But Whisper Rock was quiet, and the marina was empty. The race had ended hours ago, but Mia had remained on the beach, watching the turbulent water as if it would eventually yield its secrets.
It did, in a manner of speaking, several minutes later. A lone light appeared in the distance, moving quickly towards the shore. There you are. She had driven out as far as she could go without running out of gas and leaving herself stranded on the Sound, and she had not found anything more than the quiet rock that protruded out of the water and seemed to have its own atmosphere. The air around it had been odd and thick, almost stifling, and she had not remained near it long.
But she hadn't given up. Though she knew it was insane and would likely amount to absolutely nothing, something had kept her riveted to the water, watching silently for Ian Crane to return. And now he had.
She walked casually to the marina to meet him, and when he spotted her standing there, watching him silently, he scowled. "What are you doing here?" he demanded.
"How did you do that earlier?"
"Do what?"
"Just disappear like that, on the water. There was nothing else for miles. I saw a flash of light, and then you were gone."
He stared at her for a long moment. "You were following me?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"I want to know what your secret is. Something isn't right with you."
"Me? Something isn't right with you!" he exploded, his expression incredulous. "You're the one who followed me and waited here to confront me about--whatever crazy thing you think you saw."
"You can't have just disappeared. It's not right." She crossed her arms over her chest, holding his gaze steadily.
He snorted and set to tying up his boat. "You don't know what you're talking about," he muttered. "You must have imagined it."
"Where did you go? Home? To the island?"
"None of your business! God! You are the most meddling, nosy person I have ever met!" He vaulted up onto the dock, slinging his pack over his shoulder and staring at her with dark, hostile eyes.
"I will find out what is going on with you. I heard you talking to Aylin. I know there is something really weird about the two of you and that island."
Ian shook his head, pushing past her. She chased him, but he stopped abruptly, spinning back to her. They collided, and Mia staggered backward to steady herself. Ian glared at her. "Why are you following me? Are you trying to get me to ask you to the dance or are you just trying to irritate me to death?"
Mia gasped in outrage. "What? I have absolutely no interest in going anywhere with you, Ian Crane!"
"Then stay out of my life!
