Noah settled Jon back into his room and went to the kitchen. He found Abby preparing lunch.

Abby glanced up and smiled at him, her face fresh and revived from the outing. She would forever and always be the girl who stargazed beside the river with him—the first girl who’d shared his love of astronomy. He’d fallen in love with her on the spot—his falling star, his Haley’s Comet, his very own Aurora Borealis.

“Earth to Noah.”

Noah blinked and found amusement dancing in Abby’s eyes. How was it she always managed to be so upbeat? “What?”

Abby shrugged. “You looked a million miles away. I asked if you wanted a sandwich.”

Try light years away. “I was, and yes, I’d love a sandwich. Can I help?”

She handed him a loaf of French bread. “You butter and I’ll grill.”

He buttered the bread while she turned on the Panini grill, then began slicing the cheese.

“Gram said to tell you hello,” Abby said.

“I need to get by and see her.”

“She would love that.” Abby placed the sandwiches on the grill, closed the lid, and opened the fridge. “Iced tea?”

“Yes, please.”

She poured two glasses and set them on the table. Minutes later, the grill beeped, and she set the sandwiches on plates.

Noah leaned against the kitchen counter. “This smells fabulous. Don’t you want to eat with Jon?”

Her expression clouded, and she shook her head. “I’m sure he’s resting.”

His conversation with Jon came back to him as he sat across from the woman he loved—Jon’s wife, he reminded himself.

“What’s wrong, Abby?”

She picked at her sandwich. “Nothing.”

Noah touched her arm, and she froze, her gaze shifting to him. Suddenly they were kids again with their whole lives stretched out in front of them. “You can tell me anything.”

Her eyes widened, and she swallowed. The movement wasn’t intended to be sensual, but it was. He sensed she felt it, too, because a pink tinge flushed her cheeks.

She ducked her head. “I was just remembering that time we watched the northern lights in Gram’s backyard.”

Noah smiled, recalling how he’d almost kissed her until Jon showed up. What would have happened if he’d thrown caution to the wind and made his move? What would his future have been?

“What about it?”

“It was one of the few times we were alone together.”

A planned event and one he’d worked hard to orchestrate…that failed because he’d been a coward. “It was.”

“We were always the three musketeers.” Abby looked at him, her eyes warm with fond memories.

“We were; we still are.” Noah didn’t add that it would only be for a little while longer.

Her smile made him long to hold her in his arms and tell her how much he loved her.

He was ready to do Jon’s bidding right here and now. Yanking himself back from the edge of no return, he stood. “I completely forgot I have an appointment. I’ve got to go.”

“But you haven’t eaten.”

“I know. I’m sorry.”

“At least take it with you.” She wrapped his sandwich in a napkin and handed it to him.

“Thanks. Sorry to run off.
