Noah settled Jon back into his room and went to the kitchen. He found Abby preparing lunch.
Abby glanced up and smiled at him, her face fresh and revived from the outing. She would forever and always be the girl who stargazed beside the river with himâthe first girl whoâd shared his love of astronomy. Heâd fallen in love with her on the spotâhis falling star, his Haleyâs Comet, his very own Aurora Borealis.
âEarth to Noah.â
Noah blinked and found amusement dancing in Abbyâs eyes. How was it she always managed to be so upbeat? âWhat?â
Abby shrugged. âYou looked a million miles away. I asked if you wanted a sandwich.â
Try light years away. âI was, and yes, Iâd love a sandwich. Can I help?â
She handed him a loaf of French bread. âYou butter and Iâll grill.â
He buttered the bread while she turned on the Panini grill, then began slicing the cheese.
âGram said to tell you hello,â Abby said.
âI need to get by and see her.â
âShe would love that.â Abby placed the sandwiches on the grill, closed the lid, and opened the fridge. âIced tea?â
âYes, please.â
She poured two glasses and set them on the table. Minutes later, the grill beeped, and she set the sandwiches on plates.
Noah leaned against the kitchen counter. âThis smells fabulous. Donât you want to eat with Jon?â
Her expression clouded, and she shook her head. âIâm sure heâs resting.â
His conversation with Jon came back to him as he sat across from the woman he lovedâJonâs wife, he reminded himself.
âWhatâs wrong, Abby?â
She picked at her sandwich. âNothing.â
Noah touched her arm, and she froze, her gaze shifting to him. Suddenly they were kids again with their whole lives stretched out in front of them. âYou can tell me anything.â
Her eyes widened, and she swallowed. The movement wasnât intended to be sensual, but it was. He sensed she felt it, too, because a pink tinge flushed her cheeks.
She ducked her head. âI was just remembering that time we watched the northern lights in Gramâs backyard.â
Noah smiled, recalling how heâd almost kissed her until Jon showed up. What would have happened if heâd thrown caution to the wind and made his move? What would his future have been?
âWhat about it?â
âIt was one of the few times we were alone together.â
A planned event and one heâd worked hard to orchestrateâ¦that failed because heâd been a coward. âIt was.â
âWe were always the three musketeers.â Abby looked at him, her eyes warm with fond memories.
âWe were; we still are.â Noah didnât add that it would only be for a little while longer.
Her smile made him long to hold her in his arms and tell her how much he loved her.
He was ready to do Jonâs bidding right here and now. Yanking himself back from the edge of no return, he stood. âI completely forgot I have an appointment. Iâve got to go.â
âBut you havenât eaten.â
âI know. Iâm sorry.â
âAt least take it with you.â She wrapped his sandwich in a napkin and handed it to him.
âThanks. Sorry to run off.
